setting up a test side

  • I want to set up a test side at adampoulemanos.com/test …. I want to set it up so it just uses my existing database/posts so I can test CSS and index.
    I figured I could do this just by installing a fresh installation of wordpress in the directory and pointing it to my existing database, I just want to make sure I don’t do anything that will corrupt or mess up my database. How do I got about doing it and ensuring that this will not happen?

  • you can install it and edit the config file to point to a new table prefix ie… the default table prefix is wp_, you can change that to test_

    As I understand it – this cant be done – not quite.

    That was a bit cryptic Root ?? . You can set up a new “test” page with it’s own “test” css. Just upload them to your existing blog directory and then point your browser at it. If you chmod both files 666 you can edit them in “templates” in admin. They will use your existing database to grab posts, menu items etc however the “not quite” bit that Root mentions is that you can’t view the “comments” side of your blog with the new CSS. If you click on the comments button you end up back in your current layout. I don’t know a way round this so I leave styling on the comment side till I go live with the new layout.

    There are variations between 1.2 Mingus and 1.3 which can disturb this but as Stu says that will work pretty neatly. He should know ??
