• Hi Everyone!

Apologies for what is going to appear as an incredibly dumb question.

I have recently had a wordpress website created for me by a webdesigner and now I have decided that I would like a blog to go with the site. Now, im new to blogs but I have a reasonably good understanding of how wordpress works as I have updated the website quite a bit myself as well as adding plugins. So my question is, how would I go about setting up the blog?

So far, I have added a new page and strangely enough called it ‘blog’. How do I setup this page so that it looks like a standard blog but with the look of the rest of the site?

I know this is a very stupid question as im asking how to create a blog using wordpress but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much for your time!
    Will

  • Does your site currently use a static front page?

    Wow that was quick.

I think so. Without coming across as trying to spam the forum, my site is: selandscapeconstruction.co.uk. Can you tell from this or is there something I need to check that will tell me?

Posting your site’s url is not spam in situations like this. We often need to see the site to get a proper understanding of the problems you might be facing. ??

Unfortunately, it looks like your site is not using a static front page – which is rather a shame as the solution would have been really simple. I don’t know why your previous designer didn’t do this but it has made the job a little harder.

I think your best bet would to to create a new category called Blog and post all of your blog posts under that category and nowhere else. Adding this new section to your site’s navigation is, however, going to be really difficult as it looks like your main nav menu has been hardcoded. That means some is going to have to manually add it to the relevant template file in the your theme and then adjust all of the menu CSS to compensate for the changes.

    Thanks esmi

Yes I have just had a look under reader settings and the ‘your latest posts’ is selected.

So would you recommend going back to my designer to get this sorted?

Yes. What you need to ask for is:

    – the front page to be changed to a static one
    – a new Blog page to be created as the main posts page
    – the hard-coded top menu to be replaced a dynamic menu
    – at least 1 custom menu to be implemented/available for the top menu

Longer term, that will give you a far greater level of flexibility and control over the site as it grows.
