I just recently installed WordPress and have been getting familiar as I can with how to use it, but don’t quit understand the difference between a page and a post.
I would like to set up my site more like a website style rather than a blog style. By that I mean that I would like to have a home page that is an intro to my site, and a menu with categories that I publish new pages to. I’m having trouble figuring out how to create each post as a page under a category. I don’t understand the difference between a page and a post and how to make it work so that I will create a new page for each post and place it in the appropriate category.

It sounds like you will want to ignore posts and just create your content as pages

I’ve been playing around with it some more and when I create a new page, I don’t have the option of placing it in one of the categories I created, but when I post, I have the option of placing it in one of the categories that I created.
OK, I just read the docs about pages, and I will have to adapt to this unless or until I learn more.
    Thanks

Posts have categories, pages do not.

Using a website about Otters as an arbitrary example, If you have six pages about different kinds of Otter, you wouldn’t use categories, but would have a parent page called Otters and each page for a specific type of Otter would be assigned as a child of that page.
