Setting Page to Draft does not remove it from the navigation

  • My understanding of how the Draft vs. Published settings on pages worked was that Draft pages would not appear in the navigation. However, if I add a published page to my menu, then need to change a page to a draft, it still appears in the menu. This totally defeats the purpose of a draft doesn’t it? I’ve checked all four themes I’m using on my various sites and all of them work this way. I need to allow my clients (Editors) to turn pages off and on without me (Administrator) needing to add and remove pages from the Menu for them. Did I just pick bad themes (none are free themes) or an I missing something obvious?

    the link will appear in the menu but if you click it it will probably go to a 404 page as the post isn’t available anymore…

    No, the page remains active and visible regardless if I set it to draft mode or published mode (pending review pages give 404 but still appear in menu which I also think is bunk). If I switch my themes to TwentyEleven, they work as expected – draft pages do not appear in the public side menu regardless if I have added them to to my menu under the Appearance tab in the admin. I’m not sure how I managed to pick four different themes by four different developers which all have, in my opinion, the same pretty major bug in them. There should be a very simple line that says, “If in draft or pending review mode, don’t show in menu.” I’m off to hunt for that missing line…
