Setting a Private Site

Hi,

Is it possible to set the site to private, where users will see a login page when they first launch the website? Only after login, will they be brought to the homepage and access the content they have permission.

In my tests, when I set to private site under settings, the login button appears, but I am not able to login as a user. I was not even able to load the login page on the browser.

Would it be possible to advise if there is an alternative way to approach this?
