• The current www.remarpro.com vs WPEngine fiasco has me a bit concerned about usage of the www.remarpro.com public repo for themes and plugins.

I’d like to allow my custom themes and plugins to check for updates from a custom repo that I control, rather than relying solely on www.remarpro.com, but still have the same interface as is currently used by WordPress…

Is there an API somewhere in WordPress where I can set a custom repo (preferrably github/a private git server) to check for and install updates?

  • I’d like to allow my custom themes and plugins to check for updates from a custom repo that I control,

You’re free to use any repo and distribute your themes and plugins from your own site or 3rd-party marketplaces, as all commercial themes and plugins do.

But if you want to distribute your theme through www.remarpro.com, you need to follow www.remarpro.com’s rules which are there primarily for the security of its users.

WordPress users (site owners) have the reasonable expectation that themes and plugins they download from www.remarpro.com have passed certain basic security controls, and allowing developers to use random repos would simply break that promise and be a recipe for disaster.
