"Session has expired" problem at login

  • I’ll give a brief overview of the course of actions that bring rise to the problem.

    1. We begin on the WordPress dashboard. I click on the “Customize Your Site” button in the Getting Started column of the Welcome section.

    2. It brings me back to the wordpress login page showing a yellow banner that says, “Your session has expired. Please login again.”

    3. I then re-enter my information. It briefly (maybe 2 seconds) shows a page that says, “You have logged in successfully,” before returning to the same page from step 2 (Your session has expired. Please login again).

    P.S. My test site has also stopped rendering its CSS, which may or may not be related but, since it started occurring at the same time, I decided it valuable to be included.

    Have you tried:

    -deactivating ALL plugins (yes, all) temporarily to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s).

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems (because the hooks remain unless plugins completely removed or some plugins stick around in cached files. So by renaming the folder, you break them and force them inactive).
    – To rule out any theme-specific issue, try switching to the unedited default Twenty Twelve theme for a moment using the WP dashboard.

    Hey Tara,

    Thanks a lot for your prompt response. Your first suggestion solved the problem. It was the W3 Total Cache plugin that was causing the problem. Still not sure why exactly. It’s a pretty valuable plugin so I’m going to try to figure out what, specifically, is causing the issue.

    Hey,

    Actually, (and I’m terribly sorry) but that did NOT fix entire issue. It fixed the problem with concerning the CSS but I still have the “Your session has expired. Please login again,” issue when trying to open up the “Customize Your Site,” link.
