• When on the front end of the website, we have no issues with our website. However, when we log into the admin, we keep experiencing “Service Unavailable” issues (sometimes every log in, sometimes not). Once you experience this in the admin, then the front end of the site becomes unresponsive as well and the browser must be closed and reopened for it to work.

We have enabled all debugging and had a developer look at our log files with no flags being raised.

Is this an issue for anyone else and is there a fix.

This is completely debilitating since we cannot update our site.

  • You need to include as much information as possible. It makes debugging so much easier.

    Thanks Dave.

The is the exact message we get:

    Service Unavailable

The service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.

Typically, we are able to log into the admin and get into the dashboard’s main screen. When we click on a link (there hasn’t been just one specific one) we get the error. We have had it do it on plugins, pages, posts, media, etc. Once in a while it will let us navigate around the admin for a little bit, but then we will get the error.

We have also had this happen during a page edit. You will see a spinning arrow in the top of the page which I am assuming that we have lost some sort of connection.

    Here is our install.

Also, if it helps, we have another site running on the same host (uic.com is it’s own vhost) with no issues like this.

Can you run the P3 Profiler plugin to see which, if any, of your plugins are causing a problem.

    Dave,

I edited my above post and that contains the URL.

Your server doesn’t seem to like heavy load. It would appear to be down.

    Dave,

I see that is down now! That is a completely different error message. Once the site comes back up, maybe we can re-visit.

If it helps we are using Rackspace Cloud for our hosting.

I visited the site and refreshed a few times. On one occasion I saw your Service Unavailable message briefly before the whole thing stopped working.

    This is from Wikipedia:

    503 Service Unavailable
The server is currently unavailable (because it is overloaded or down for maintenance).[2] Generally, this is a temporary state.

I think your server is therefore under-resourced or poorly configured.

Why would we have this issue on one of the vhosts at a time? when parts.uic.com becomes unresponsive, uic.com is working? Of course, except today when the whole host is down.

    Thread Starter leonbp10

    (@leonbp10)

Does anyone have any more insight into this issue? Both sites are up and running fine this morning, but I have the Service Unavailable issue resurface this morning on the parts.uic.com admin.

Your site may benefit from a caching plugin such as W3 Total Cache. It becomes unavailable when under load so serving up cached content rather than querying the database on every page load may give your server some breathing space.

    Dave,

We have tried that plugin (and W3 Super Cache) and they actually caused a lot of headache on the site, to the point where we couldn’t keep the plugin implemented.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

I think I may have isolated a plugin that was causing the issue. It appears the the plugin Broken Link Checker was causing the Service Unavailable issue. It may have been that in concert with other plugins/theme/etc, but so far deleting that plugin seems to have solved our problem.

    Thanks for all the help.
