• I have been running the same WordPress install for about three years. I have seldom had a problem with it and try to keep it updated and current. Over the weekend, I changed themes, going back to Magazine Basic, a theme I have used previously, with no problems. That took place early Saturday morning. When I checked the blog Sunday morning, I began seeing the following message at the top, above the header.

    Service Temporarily Unavailable

The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Keep in mind that that blog seems to be working fine, albeit a bit slow at times. I have been on a live chat with my hosting provider, Hostmonster, and they are telling me it is something in my install. I briefly changed back to my previous theme, just to make sure there wasn’t a problem there. The error message still persisted. I disabled anything I could see running in the header, Google Analytics and anything else I thought might be the problem. The error message is still there.

I had someone tell me it might be my Facebook like widget, so I removed it. The error message is still there. I even removed WordPress SEO, which I installed Saturday, thinking it may be the problem. Nothing changed, the error message is still there. Every once in a while, it will go away, but it comes right back.

I would really like to correct this, but I haven’t a clue where to look. I would appreciate any help you folks may be able to give.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress.

I had already changed themes and the error message was still there. I disabled all of my plugins and the message went away. I started enabling them until it came back, then narrowed it down to one plugin, WordPress Database Backup. The message came back as soon as I enabled it, went away as soon as I disabled it again. I haven’t a clue why it would be causing the error, but it appears that was the case.
