When I attempt to login as any user role other than admin or subscriber, the login returns a simple text page that says “Service is not available.”

Logging in as the admin or as a “subscriber” works fine.

    Hosted on a Windows server.

Was working yesterday–not today. I haven’t made any changes to the site since then.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

Thanks for the response. I solved my own problem, first by disabling various plugins as suggested.

The problem plugin turned out to be s2Member framework. I tried various approaches to fix it, and finally discovered that s2Member has a feature that will disable login by a user who uses too many different IP addresses within a defined time period. For some reason, one of the test login IDs I use had exceeded the limit. I discovered (kind of accidentally) that there is way to reset access on the user profile page. Voila that fixed it. Although a nuisance in my testing phase, this is useful to know going forward as I manage this website.
