I just converted a single site to Multisite subdomains–followed all the directions as usual and was able to create the first additional site. However, when accessing the site URL it comes back with a Server Not Found error page.

The newly added site is listed in admin and the tables are in the database. I made sure there is a wildcard subdomain in the cpanel. The htaccess and config.php modifications are exactly the same as the instructions in codex.

I checked several browsers with the same error. I thought it might need time to propogate so I waited two days with no luck. I then called my hosting service and they reset the DNS but that didn’t work.

I’m sure there is something I overlooked. I’ve installed Multisite maybe 30 times with no errors so I know I missed something or other. One thing I noticed is you no longer have to create a “blogs.dir” directory for Multisite. Am I right on that?

Can you think of anything I should check so the new sites appear?

    WP: 3.5.1
    Main Browser: Firefox
    Theme: Atahualpa
    Host: Hostgator with WHM

Update: I tried deleting that first test site (ny.domain.com) and adding it back. Same error.

I created a second test site (chicago.domain.com) and it worked fine.

I deleted the first test site again and created it again with a slightly different name (nyc.domain.com) and it works.

So, for whatever reason, my first test site URL doesn’t seem like it would ever work properly (ny.domain.com).

But Multisite is working. My advice is if the first site don’t resolve, create a second, different one and test that.

    Pretty obvious, right? ??

    Marking this resolved.
