I’ve been receiving the Server error 500 for about a week now about 40% of the the times that I do anything on the website from the simplest page view to back-end admin tasks. The PHP error log contains numerous occurrences of the following message.

[25-Jan-2016 16:18:09 UTC] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 7340009 bytes) in /home/sbwebspot/public_html/wp-content/plugins/better-wp-security/core/modules/backup/class-itsec-backup.php on line 206

That’s a lot of memory! Deactivating the iThemes Security plugin has stopped the server errors and the error log entries. Naturally this gives me an uncomfortable feeling in more ways than one.

Does anyone have any ideas what the issue may be?

The problem is caused by the Scheduled Database Backup feature of the iTSec plugin.

Disable it temporarily and then wait and see whether that fixes the issue.

The recommended step did stop the server 500 (out of memory) errors. Thanks a bunch. Most curious that this could be an issue in a mature product.
