server config for Akismet?

    Just a quickie question. Trying to activate Akismet I put in my key ok then it tells me this
    The key you entered could not be verified because a connection to akismet.com could not be established. Please check your server configuration.
    Are there permissions that need to be set somewhere?

    In simply trying to activate akismet, now I have lines through everything in my admin. Whats up with that? I deactivated akismet the lines are still all over. Did it mess up my admin? I finally got a good clean install and now this?
    Please advise

    Ok, I got akismet to work by hard wiring the api code #, but I still have lines through everything. Can anyone tell me why? Or how to fix it?
