As more and more people are accessing website from mobile device it will be nice to allow to set a separate static front page for mobile which is different than desktop. This will avoid using another mobile theme plugin to set a new theme/home page differently than desktop. Some may think why we need this if the theme is responsive. I would say we need to think beyond blog and allowing a flexibility to set a fewer content on mobile will be ideal.

  • Personally, I disagree. A properly coded responsive layout is all that’s needed.

Having separate content for desktp and mobile just adds confusion and complexity. A lot of people have a hard enough time figuring out how to edit one homepage… imagine how much worse it is when they need to know which one ot edit! And what happens when they edit one and not the other because “I forgot that there was two of them”? On top of that, what about tablet devices? Do they show desktop or mobile content, or do we add in another area for tablets? And what tablet sizes are we going to cater for if we are?

As you can see, it’s more complex than just “add in another area”, and all of that confusion goes away when you use a properly designed responsive layout, which is why I personally think that while your idea is valid, it’s not something that I’d support.

Good points and you have answered it all. For non-pros, they just need to set a static page or no static page at all. Even now we have one static and one landing pagr, I don’t think that is confusing. More over this should be an optional feature, if someone wants to use such additiobal feature then let them use it. Again WordPress needs to be beyond a blog, it is already and hoping to see more exciting features. This is my thought.

As soon as it’s an “optional” feature, it’s something that should really be a plugin, and not core. That way it’s available for people that migth like the idea, but it’s not bloating the core code for those of us that wouldn’t use it.
