Separate comments option (allow/disallow) for posts/pages

I am constantly annoyed at having to remove allow comments from pages but I do want them on posts. Additionally, in recent versions of WordPress, the allow comments checkbox is no longer an option at the bottom of writing a new post/page but rather has to be done in the quick edit. I would like to suggest returning that check box feature to the write panel and also to separate the two in the general settings, comments, to allow comments on posts, for example, but not on pages.
