My SEO meta title keeps changing to undefined for %%title%%, and meta description isn’t displayed at all in the Google search result preview on posts and pages. The fields still seem to have the correct data, but it just isn’t showing properly in the preview. I have noticed this happening for certain built in variables for these fields. Every time I enter the editor (Gutenberg) to modify a page or a post, I have to be sure to scroll to the bottom and make a small modification to both of these fields (usually just enter a space at the end, and then erase it) in order for the meta preview to not say “undefined” for the title, and just blank for the description.

For example, on one of my posts I have the title set to %%title%% %%sep%% %%sitename%% and it shows “undefined | You Could Automate That” in the preview. The description is set to %%excerpt%%, and it shows no description in the preview.

    Hi @cohdee,

The issue noticed is within the Preview and not with the actual title and description of the website. Even when you notice “undefined”, the correct values should be showing up at the front end of the pages.

We have noticed anomalies in some cases where the “Google Preview” isn’t able to pick up the correct values and shows up as “undefined”. This could happen when using Page Builders.

I could notice you are using Stackable Builder and I’m also able to replicate similar when tested, however, can confirm when checking the Meta Descriptions or titles for the respective pages it does display the correct title and descriptions in the frontend.

I’m afraid the behaviour noticed is more of a compatibility issue. I’ll make sure to bring this further to our developer’s attention to see if there is any workaround to get the preview working.

Will keep you posted once we get further feedback asap.

    Best Regards,

    Nithin

Ahh, understood. Although, I’m not using Stackable Builder. I use the Gutenberg editor, with Astra for my theme, and Spectra blocks.

I’m glad to hear that it’s only a surface level issue, but do you know if there’s a way to keep this issue from affecting my SEO score from SmartCrawl?

Currently, if I neglect to fix it every time I edit a page/post, it causes the SEO Analysis to alert for several items on that page/post. Sadly, if i’m not able to get accurate reports, the plugin isn’t of much use to me.

    Hi @cohdee,

On further testing we were able to replicate the issue isn’t just specific to Stackable. Could replicate the issue with other builders too.

However, it shouldn’t be affecting how the title and description would be loaded in the front end.

Our SmartCrawl team is already working on a fix regarding this, however, at the moment I don’t have an exact timeline regarding the status of the fix.

Sorry for any inconvenience due to this.

If you are referring to SEO Analysis, then they should work fine even if “undefined” is shown as the issue is specific to the preview.

Could you please share a screenshot of what exact is still shown that isn’t accurate?

Sure thing! Here’s what the SEO recommendations show when I don’t manually fix the title and desc meta:

In the post/page editor (only the 3 relevant alerts are shown in this screenshot):

And then, if I update the post/page without manually fixing, this will also be reflected in the alerts in all posts/all pages list:

And here’s what’s shown if I manually fix the title and meta desc, and then update the post/page:

And from the all posts/all pages list:

Let me know if you have any questions!

    Hello @cohdee,

It looks like there was an issue with the screenshot uploads.

Could you please try uploading and sharing them via https://prnt.sc/ or a similar image sharing service.

    Best Regards,

Oh no, I’m sorry about that, I was in the middle of a host migration and forgot about those! To make matters worse, I’m stuck using mobile right now. Thanks for your patience, and here you go:

    Hi @cohdee

Thank for response, screenshots came through correctly this time.

The notifications/issues shown on screenshots are consequence of “how” the plugin checks the content – which is affected by the same thing that causes the “undefined” issue in editor. So when this is fixed in the plugin (unfortunately, I don’t have ETA), the analysis should “automagically” start working fine too.

However, for now you can try a small change in SmartCrawl configuration:

    – go to the “smartCrawl -> Settings -> General Settings” page
    – and in “Engine” section switch from default “Content” to “Wide” or even “All”
    – save settings, clear all caches.

The difference here is that the “Content” (default option) only analyzes by hooking up to core hooks such as “wp_title” and “the_content” filter hooks. But the other options actually check “front-end” (more like “crawler”) so they should see – and analyze – what is actually displayed on a given page.

There’s a good chance that this may help with these analysis for now, until the fix is included in the plugin.

    Best regards,
    Adam
