I have followed the instruction you have given others for trying to resolve this issue with the Yoast helper tool. I have also checked to make sure debug was turned off. However I am still getting the error.
    Error message
Error parsing the response to JSON.

    Response is some html.

    Please advise.

We’re sorry you’re having trouble with completing SEO Data Optimization. I imagine this can be frustrating for you.

Let’s try running it in Conflict Check mode by disabling all non-Yoast plugins and the default 2020 theme.

    1. Install Yoast Test Helper plugin and reset “SEO and Indexables migration”
    2. Install and activate Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin. This plugin has a troubleshooting mode, which does not affect normal visitors to your site. Using this plugin, disable all non-Yoast plugins and switch to the default 2020 theme.

If you’re unfamiliar with checking for conflicts, we’d like to point you to a step-by-step guide that will walk you through the process: How to check for plugin conflicts

    3. Try to re-run SEO Data Optimization. Does the process complete successfully?

    Hi,

Yes, please do reset the indexables using the Yoast Test Helper plugin and perform a conflict check.

Otherwise, please do refer to this article for more assistance if it still results in the SEO data optimization process erroring out and failing to complete – https://yoast.com/help/we-couldnt-complete-the-optimization-of-your-seo-data/

    Hello,
That worked in troubleshooting mode but when I took it out of troubleshooting mode went to Tools, the start SEO data optimization button was still there. I tried running it again and it was successful this time!
    Thanks

    Hi @fooey

We’re glad to hear that you were able to complete the SEO data optimization process both in troubleshooting mode and out of it. This means that the indexables and text link counter data are now correct and processed. It may have been a conflict with another plugin or theme that caused the process to fail momentarily.

We’ll be setting this to resolved. Thanks!
