• How would I find out the correct way (if possible) to re-sell a free template that I modify.

    eg.

I want to offer 3 themes on a website that a customer can choose. Once they choose one, I do the modification and sell it. That same theme may be sold many times.

I know I can buy the extended license on a premium site and re-sell them; but what are the rules on a free template I download through wordpress until the budget allows.

If someone could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

    -Thanks

  • All of the themes you download from the official WP.org theme repository are licensed under the GPL, which means that you are perfectly free to modify them and even sell your modified versions on your own website, but you must extend that same freedom to anyone who buys your modified themes.

For themes that were downloaded elsewhere, you’d have to make sure you carefully read the license terms for that theme.

Awesome, do you know if there are any restrictions like keeping the name of the template creators on the theme in the footer? or can I alter the css to something else?

Thanks a million for all your help too!

To the best of my knowledge, if you distribute a modified version of someone else’s GPL-code, you must attribute them in some way, although IIRC it does not have to be in a public-facing way. You could, for example, include a readme.txt file with the line: “This theme is based on FooWP, which is copyright 2014 by Awesome WP Developer.”
