• Hi Guys,

I am hosting my WordPress Blog with Bluehost but I am having trouble uploading the Google Sitemaps plugin using FTP. I download the Plugin using Wizip to my desktop then upload it. This seems ok until I log in to my WordPress dashboard the plugin is nowhere to be seen. Any ideas?

Also with self hosted blogs is it still possible to add Plugins from the WordPress dashboard instead of using the FTP client or will they not work properly?

    Thanks for your time,

    Stuart.

    Hi Samuel,

Thank you for that. Can I ask what the difference is between installing plugins via FTP (with a hosting company) and through the WordPress dashboard? It is so much easier through WordPress. I did see somewhere that I would have to modify the settigs on my hosting company to allow this to happen… is this true?

    Cheers,

    Stuart.

to do it from the dashboard, you may need to supply the ftp credentials the 1st time
some hosts don’t allow this action at all – so ftp is the way to go

With the FTP I uploaded the Google Sitemap but it did not show up on the dashboard, any ideas what I did wrong? Do I upload the whole Zip file or part of it. If so which part?

    Cheers.

you upload the folder which would be contained within the zip file

I upload the zip, then unarchive it once its in the plugin folder

How do I unarchive it in the plugin folder? Is this done in the WordPress dashboard or the FTP client? I upload the file but nothing happens on the WordPress side??

    Helllllllppp!!!

“unarchive” is the same as “unzip”. right click on the Zip file and select “unzip” and select a location where you want the contents of the zip file to go. Then, go to the location and you’ll see the folder. Open that folder and there is typically another folder within – this folder is typically the same name as the plugin. Upload that entire folder using your FTP program.

Hope this helps and doesn’t hinder ??
