• Hi,

I’ll be teaching in the fall.

I am wondering if I should host wordpress or if I should use the service at wordpress.com.

I already have a self install of wordpress (for a podcast), and use the service of wordpress.com for something personal.

I will be posting assignments, newsletter, have an email list, post few videos/pictures, etc.

I was wondering if it will be worth it to use a self install or use wordpress.com as a teacher. I was wondering if it will be too much work to maintain a self install (vs the cost added up with wordpress.com).

    Thanks

    S.

If you want name.wordpress.com, it’s mostly free (videos I’m not sure of). If you want domain.com, it’s pretty much the same as a domain registration anywhere ?? If you’re not comfortable with the idea of FTPing into your site now and then to fix things, do .com.

Am confortable. I am mostly wondering about maintenance, etc.

A .org is best to host anything I want (videos, etc.), but maintenance (read: spam, hack, etc.) is what worries me ??

    It will be pretty minimalist.

Hence the ‘FTPing in your site…’ question ?? Maintenance is pretty straightforward until things go wrong ??

Thanks. Yep, I know that for a fact ?? (but my new host is great!)

There’s very little maintenance once you’ve established your foundation. Your host will do back ups for you so the only thing that would be different from .com would be upgrading to new .org versions.
