Select at least one list

I have a checkbox list of three groups to choose from in my form. I would like to require that at least one of them be checked in order to subscribe. There is an error message for that – but it’s not appearing when no option is checked.
Right now I’m forced to have them checked by default, but I would rather not.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!
