    I just installed and updated my WordPress to the latest version 4.9.1. I was running version 4.3 for a long time before this. The update went fine, the website is okay, no major problems – everything seems to work okay.

    However, the “select all” checkbox on the admin side doesn’t work at all. If I click it, nothing happens. None of the other checkboxes on the page work. I have tested this on multiple browsers (Firefox, Chrome) and with different pages (comments, posts, plugins) and it never works at all. Same problem.

    I can’t see anyone else talking about this. Any idea of what to do? Why would the select all checkbox not work? How did it break? Not sure how to fix this. And it was working fine with 4.3, only after the update did it break.

    Hi @buddha1822,
    standard procedure to troubleshoot is to switch your theme to a default (twenty…) unedited theme, and deacticate all your plugins.

    If there is no problem it’s a theme or plugin problem.
    Then reactivate your theme. If all is still OK reactivate one plugin at a time until the problem shows up again. Then you will know which plugin causes the problem.

    Why would this have to do anything with my themes? That makes no sense? The select all checkbox problem is happening ONLY within the WP-Admin pages, nowhere else. That has nothing to do with the theme I’ve publicly selected…

    The problem is linked to the WP-Admin and WordPress files and the way the admin area displays. The problem is the select all checkbox does not work ANYWHERE within WP-Admin. Again, this has nothing to do with themes. At all.

    @buddha1822,

    Again, this has nothing to do with themes. At all.

    Actually themes and plugins are still loaded in the Admin section. Themes can modfy th appearance and function of the backend.

    The procedure I described in my earlier post should help you identify what is causing the check boxes to not function.

    Again, this has nothing to do with themes. At all.

    Actually, if you know how WordPress works, it has everything to do with themes and plugins. Javascripts and functions added by a theme or plugin can interfere with core functionality and most of the time do-

    I’ve been using WordPress for 11 years, I know how it works. Nothing changed though. I’ve been using the same theme for 6 years, hand-written by me and friends, and it has never caused a problem. It can’t be the theme.

    I’m looking for help regarding why this new version of WordPress (3.9.1) has broken select all checkboxes. That seems to be a bug within WordPress and the admin code, not any of my themes.

    If you think it is my themes or plugins, give me an idea of where to start. Again, nothing has changed, everything has worked perfectly fine for 6 years, so if there is a conflict what am I looking for? I can’t “check with your theme developer” because I am the theme developer and I wrote it, but I am not sure what I am supposed to “check for” because nothing in the theme interacts with the WP-Admin code at all.

    @buddha1822,

    Nothing changed though.

    Well apparently something has changed because you are now having problems with your site.

    I’ve been using the same theme for 6 years…

    WordPress has changed a lot in 6 years, maybe some feature you were using has been deprecated.

    If you think it is my themes or plugins, give me an idea of where to start.

    We believe there MAY be an incompatibility between WP4.9.1 and one of your plugins or your theme. I already suggested that you should follow the “standard operating procedure” to troubleshoot. Change your theme to one of the default ones (twenty…) and deactivate all plugins. Check if the problem persists. If the problem is gone, reactivate your plugins one by one and check for problems. If a problem occurs the last plugin reactivated is the culprit.

    … nothing in the theme interacts with the WP-Admin code at all.

    Theme and plugin code is loaded even in the admin section. Your theme may not be doing anything “actively” in the admin section, but an incompatibility may still exist.

    Haven’t updated anything in your theme in 6 years? SMH…

    because nothing in the theme interacts with the WP-Admin code at all.

    Using WordPress for 11 years and not knowing that plugins or theme JS and php can interfere with core functionality? SMH

    Did you use developer tools to look for JS errors?

    As expected, it had nothing to do with the theme. Because common sense proves that the theme does not affect the checkboxes on the WP-Admin pages.

    The problem came from the Remove Admin Toolbar plugin. When this was activated (removing the toolbar for the WP-Admin page) it broke the checkboxes. When this was turned off, the select all checkbox worked fine again.

    No other plugins or themes affected this and that was the fix, for now (since I now have the admin toolbar showing up again).

    Because common sense proves that the theme does not affect the checkboxes on the WP-Admin pages.

    In this case no, but if the functions or scripts from that plugin were to be included in a theme they would break the checkboxes.

    Here are a few ways the theme can affect wp-admin: https://www.elegantthemes.com/blog/tips-tricks/how-to-customize-the-wordpress-admin-to-your-needs

    I am glad you found a solution –

    I had the same issue and it was being caused by the WP Admin Bar Removal plugin
