In a recent Wordfence article regarding 5.0, I read this: “The current version of WordPress core is 4.9.8. If you remain on this version, you will continue to receive security updates from the WordPress core team.”

Would automatic updates have to be turned on to get any security updates for 4.9.8? I like to back up my site before applying any WP update, so I have turned on auto updating. Will security patch updates for older WP versions available for download WP.org moving forward?

By default, only minor releases – such as for maintenance and security purposes – and translation file updates are enabled on most sites. In special cases, plugins and themes may be updated.

Thanks for you answer. I understand the default is that minor releases are enabled by default. Since a minor release caused a client’s site to fail and I noted that others in the WP community had the same issue, I haven’t felt comfortable allowing auto updates.

Is the answer that auto updates need to be enabled to get the security patches for WordPress 4.9.8? I want to keep the sites secure that need to stay on that version for now.

Auto-updates are enabled by default on WordPress for minor releases. You will need to re-enable that if you’ve turned it off, or you can manually update your clients to the 4.9.x updates. It will be considerably easier to just allow the auto-updates, as they will NOT update anyone to 5.0, just 4.9.9 and so on.
