Sorry to hear about that contact never getting replied. We do reply each and every one, I must has past us by!
So as for the .htaccess file, this is done so the AUTHORIZATION header part is correctly passed to the plugin, it offers no exploit or harm to the installation, it just fixes a potential problem with that specific header.
If you’re not confortable with plugins editing that file, you should protect it against changes and follow the instructions that the plugin offers to add the required line.
