security issues

  • hi, i have a site that is hosted on hostgator,it has been hacked twice in the last 3 weeks, when i asked them about improving my security they have still not come back to me. does anyone have any suggestions/advice on any programs i could install to help prevent this?
    also, if i upload via FTP is this less secure?
