  • I have the same problem. I just installed Zerif Lite and entered all the information in the “Customize” section, and nothing. It would be helpful to get instructions on how to “activate” the home page. Thank you.

    Hi Cindy,

I just read in a different post (the ThemeIsle support forum) that you actually have to choose the “latest posts” for the front page displays settings in the Reading section. I never would have figured that out! I tried it in mine and now it shows.

    Hope this is helpful!

    Hi Carmen,

Thank you very much. This worked for me as well!
Who would have thought to set it to latest posts?

    Cindy

I discovered this too. I am completely new to WordPress. I want to build a website using the Zerif-lite theme but I really don’t want to show pages with all sort of blogging information information on the page. My site IS NOT A BLOG….Presumably the ‘front page’ is the page users first served by the webserver at MyDomain? So how can I show a ‘static’ front page with all the sections and the parallax effect as shown on the theme preview? (I can’t yet provide a link, since my site is running under WampServer at the moment)

    Hi “OldStick”,

I understand what you are saying. My site is not a blog site either, it’s our business site. I have set up many WordPress sites for ourselves and others, and this theme looks great but it’s definitely quirky in how it works.

When you select your “latest posts” for the front page displays in the “reading” section, it will activate the pretty home page with all the sections and widgets that you will edit in the “Customize” section under Appearance. It will not display any blog posts on it. As a matter of fact, it won’t display any blog postings at all unless you create a separate page and then make the template for that page “Blog” or “Blog template with large images”.

So basically it’s the reverse of what you would think. Once you set up the front page display to “latest posts”, you can follow their documentation to make changes to the content of that page by going to Appearance -> Customize, and then following this: https://themeisle.com/documentation-zerif-lite/

I hope this is helpful! Write back if you need more help. I am still amazed by how different implementations can be depending on the theme.

Hi Carmen, Thanks for your reply. So selecting ‘latest posts’ doesn’t mean that I am opting for a blog site? So what does it mean? BTW, I thought I could learn more about how Zerif-lite works by checking the WP documentation for creating your own theme. But there it says “A WordPress Theme is a collection of files that work together to produce a graphical interface with an underlying unifying design for a weblog.” Hmmmm! I thought that WordPress was now an all-round CMS and no longer just for bloggers…? Or have I got that wrong.

Yes, by selecting “latest posts” you are not opting for a blog site. It is the setting that tells the theme to display the home page they have designed for it. You would think that it would do that if you set up a static page, but it doesn’t. I know it’s confusing, but it’s the only way it works. That is driven by the settings in the theme developer’s code.

WordPress is definitely now an all around CMS theme. The majority of websites, including business sites, are using blogging for their content marketing and online marketing efforts, so I am thinking (just my opinion) that’s why that terminology has not been changed. We set up sites in WordPress specifically so our clients can manage the content their own and don’t have to deal with opening HTML pages with static content.

Luckily it’s a feature that is built in and available for all wordpress sites, but if you don’t set up a page for it, you don’t have to use it.

    Does this make sense?

I think I’m getting there. But in the Zerif-lite theme ‘sample page’ the ‘sidebar widgets’ show stuff like ‘Recent Posts’ ‘Recent Comments’ etc. (I have seen too that I can remove these in the Customizing Sample Page). Isn’t showing ‘Recent Posts’ is something for a blog page?
I hope this is the last msg to bother you with – you have really been very helpful – THNX for that ??

    No problem!

Those are default settings for WordPress, that all pages besides the home page have a sidebar. You can go to widgets and just “drag” them off that side, but that keeps a sidebar on your pages. So you only want to do that if you want to add different content to the sidebar (like a form for visitors to contact you, etc.).

Instead, you can also choose all your pages to have “full width” template and that should take away the sidebar on your pages. You do this by going to edit each page (that is not your home page), then look to the right of the content and you’ll see about mid way down the screen where it says “template” under Page Attributes. Just select “full width template” and that should take away the sidebar.

I’m glad I’m able to help! Just let me know if there is anything else.

Hi ceproctor, I said that was my last msg…. but I haven’t yet discovered how to add page links to the pictures in the ‘our focus’ section of the Zerif-lite theme. My site – in embryonic form – is now online, so you can see what I am trying to do.
In the top menu there are links to various site sections which still have to be developed. I would like the ‘our focus’ pictures to link to the pages with the corresponding names. In Google inspector I see that the picture links still have to be entered, but it is a mystery where that can be done????

    Hi, no problem!

To fill out the “our focus” section content with images, you have to go to the Widgets and fill out the images and links for the “Our focus widget”. What I don’t know is if those images are also hyperlinked to the links, or just the content.

I actually just tried to include the links to pages in mine, and it doesn’t seem to link to anything. This may be an issue with the code. I will contact their support team and will get back to you when I hear what’s going on.

Hi “Old Stick”, I have done some troubleshooting with the Theme Authors and it is actually a bug. They are working on this now, I will let you know when it is resolved!
    Carmen

    Thnx Carmen
As I learn more about WP and about this theme I am gradually getting where I want to be – also thanks to your help .
I am trying to create a sort of crowd funding site to introduce investors to airline pilots who are seeking to refinance their training loans. I have a database with around 200 airline pilots and I hope to get the website functioning a.s.a.p.
See here: p2p4u-finance.com (our pilot members are currently being charged extortionate interest rates by the bank – but that’s another story). My main problem now is to introduce a customized login and registration form. I have tried various plugins on my Wampserver development site and some of them seem quite promising.
    Regards
