    Hi there,

Good question. Currently, if a customer returns to your site for a new purchase, and they are not logged in, when they try and use their email address they will be presented with an “Error: Email Address already in use” message. I realize this is not ideal, as the customer may not think to login so I’m open to suggestions.

The default behaviour EDD (without EDD Auto Register) is to show a “Already have an account? Login” Link, but only when “Show Register / Login Form?” is enabled in downloads > settings > misc. I’m leaning towards showing this link, and keeping it as close to EDD as possible.

    Hi Sumobi

Thanks for the reply. I will give you my input on this.

The risk with the solution you are leaning towards is that customers might not even be aware of, or have forgotten that they have had an account created for them. So there would need to be a message that explains this and where to look for the password. Maybe there should also be some kind of password retrieval function in case they have lost the mail.

To me it seems simpler though if the new purchase was just added to the account automatically. I would like also a returning customers to have to think as little as possible about having an account. That is the reason for me to use Auto Register.

For my shop I expect the primary use of your plugin to be a sort of backup solution when someone has problems downloading form the links in mail, (I have had that a lot with my old shop on Drupal übercart) or if customers have lost their files.

This leads me to another question. I have a lot of manual sales. Will a manual sale also trigger an auto registration?

Correct, so thinking of staying as close to EDD as possible and displaying a “Already have an account? Login” message.

No point in building extra functionality like this, WordPress already has this built in. You could simply add a “forgot password” link and link it to the lost password form.

All the customer has to do is spend a few seconds to login. Once they have done that, the purchase will be added to their existing account.

    I’m not following you here.

You mean a manual sale from the manual purchases extension? No, this plugin is only meant for the front-end checkout

    Hi,
this is exactly what i’m looking for to extend EDD.
i was just about to use membership plugins to change EDD for my website.
    until i found this.

I have this problem too. I think he meant was to use this plugin so customers can login and download the purchased files on the backend page, incase the customers lost their download links, or to download the updated files.
    just like membership plugins.

Howdy, having links for the customers to download their purchases again are already part of EDD.

yes ofcourse, but what i (and i assumed YogiBeard too) meant was to have customers to login so they can browse and download the files. so they need to be registered.

i sell premium plugins, and some customers cannot do auto update due to their hosting doesn’t allow auto-updates. so they need to download manually.
OR, they want to download another version instead of the latest version.

I have several questions, i’ll open new thread.

    Hello Sumobi,

Thanks for making this plug in. It is just what I was looking for. I am currently testing my site and have come accross the same issue describe on this thread where if I am initiating a purchase with a user who is already registered I get the “Error: Email Address already in use”.

Any updates as to when you will add the “Already have an account? login” and “Lost Password?” links to the Check out page?

    Thanks!

No problem, glad you find it handy. I’ve patched EDD to include changes that allows EDD Auto Register to work considerably better. I can’t however release the new version until after the EDD update is released.

I appreciate the quick response. Thank you!

    Hi Sumobi,

I noticed EDD has been updated. Any updates on when you will be releasing the update for your plug-in? Thank you very much for your work and Happy New Year!

    Happy New Year!

I can’t release the updated version until EDD 1.9 has been released, only the beta version has been released thus far. 1.9 is scheduled for January 8th, so I will release an update shortly after that.

EDD 1.9 has been released and so this plugin has now been updated and requires EDD 1.9.

The new version of EDD Auto Register has had a complete code overhaul and works very differently from the original version. As such, it now supports all payment gateways.

As it stands, when an existing user comes back to make a new purchase, and is logged out, their purchase will be marked as a “guest” purchase. This is how the core EDD plugin operates.

In a future version of this plugin, I will add a login form using ajax but I need to make some additional modifications in the core EDD plugin first. Have fun
