• Can anyone fully explain the difference between searchpage.php and search.php? I know they kind of go into the difference in this article, but it’s still not entirely clear to me. Can someone help me out? Thanks!

  • search.php is the file that WordPress uses to display the search results. searchpage.php is a Page Template that can be applied to a static page that affects how that static page will be displayed. Many themes use Page Templates to allow you to display sidebars and such on certain pages, but not on others.

In practical terms, if you wanted to set up your navigation menu like this: “Home | About | Search | Blog” and your users should click on “Search” to reach a separate page that contains the actual search form, then you would use searchpage.php.
