• I am attempting to implement a database/directory for a fairly large group. One of the biggest things that we need is the ability to sort, search and view the list based on different variables. As an example… This group hosts events 4 times per year. There are new individuals that attend and there are other individuals that take a leadership role for the event. We are needing to be able to keep track of the specific event # (i.e. Spring 2015, Fall 2013) and what leadership role that they filled (i.e. Kitchen, Head Servant, Music, etc.). There are about 50 positions for each event (that are always the same)… but from what I have seen, I would have a mile long list of options to choose from using this plugin.

From a simple standpoint, I need a way to view and search work history for the participants to see who and when that filled that position… but this would need to be done globally. Hopefully this makes sense and I can use the Participant Database to accomplish this. Please advise. Thanks!

It is possible to use the plugin for this purpose, but it’s not well suited to storing series of information for each record such as your events. This means that although you can store the information, doing things like adding new events and searching through the data won’t be particularly easy.

If you were to use the plugin for this, you would define one or possibly two fields for each event. These fields will hold the information of which role the person served in the event. When a new event happened, you’d add new fields that are exactly the same as the field you used for the previous events, only the name will indicate which event they are for.

The event field could be a dropdown selector (50 is not such a big number for that) or, perhaps better, two fields: one to indicate the general type of role, then the second field would have the specific role. This would make it easier to find the people who worked in a particular area by searching for the general type.

Thank you Xnau for the quick response. I do think that your plugin will provide all of the other functionality that I’m needed for the site. Is there a “better” solution for the above need? Are you aware of any other plugin that would make this process easier? Could I use your plugin for everything else and use a secondary plugin for the work history? Again, sorry for all the questions but I’m just looking for my best options before pouring a ton of time into a less than desirable situation that will only get larger and more difficult to manage in the future.

I don’t know of a better plugin for this purpose, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t one. It’s worth going to a premium plugin marketplace (like CodeCanyon) to see if there is a plugin that gets you closer to what you need. Premium plugins are a really good deal if you consider the time/money needed to get the same functionality on your own.
