Recent logs on my website are showing the error “A regex Wordfence received from its servers is invalid”. I don’t know why this would be, if this is actually a problem for my website (or what I would need to do to resolve it).

I also have a problem completing limited scans, which may be related, typically:

<b>Fatal error</b>: Out of memory (allocated 161480704) (tried to allocate 1261568 bytes) in <b>file</b>... <p>There has been a critical error on your website.</p>...

The scans get as far as “Analyzed 0 files containing 0 B of data.” and then drop off.

I’m on 123-reg hosting, which I know doesn’t help because they update the settings automatically to a limited scan every night.

Thoughts on what the issue(s) might be? Any solutions (other than change hosting provider)?

  • Hey @mkcn,

Unfortunately, this is a known issue with 123-reg hosting. The feature only sets the time on their servers. If they wish to reset it there isn’t anything we can do due to the actual configuration being on their servers. You might reach out to their support to see if they’re able to lift this restriction.

Please let me know what they say.

    Thanks,

    Thanks @wfgerald,

They won’t lift the restriction, and when asked about why the limited scan fails they said…

Not only the size on disk of a website matters when a scan is performed. Also the number of pages of the website can increase the scan time. I can understand how frustrating this can be. I’m afraid that the scan time cannot be increased to more than 180 seconds.

Website has about 10 pages, so should I go looking for old media uploads to delete?

PS just to confirm, the Regex issue is also 123-Reg specific?

    Hey @mkcn,

Unfortunately, this is what I believed would happen. It is 123-Reg specific. You can review other threads below.

I wish there was something we could do from our end, but ultimately they control their server’s resources.

Please let us know if anything else comes up.

    Thanks,

    Hi @wfgerald,

123-Reg did try to help but I kept getting as far as Analyzed 0 files containing 0 B of data and the scanner moved on to the next step without analyzing any files.

In the end I deactivated the plugin, used Wordfence Assistant to delete all data and removed the .user.ini and wordfence-waf.php files from the root WordPress folder, as well as the Wordfence config in the .htaccess file.

I then reactivated the plugin, went through the setup process again and things look to be performing as normal. So possibly a corrupt DB table or config file.

Thanks for getting back to me,

    Mark
