Search not filtering products, showing as blog posts

The search button at the top serves for a general search on the site. If you want to search for products in your Webshop add the Product Search Widget to Shop Sidebar (Customizing-> Widgets-> Shop Sidebar …)

You can add the same widget to Footer, or Sidebar, so you can have this option sitewide.

I was wondering whether there was something I could add/change in functions.php perhaps to change to functionality of that search to search only products?

I recommend you to try the Ivory Search plugin instead of changing theme files .
Add Search to Menu in WordPress (with Ivory Search Plugin)

Also, you can use the Widgets in Menu for WordPress plugin, to add the Product search widget to your Primary Navigation menu

I do have a child theme, can you tell me how I would edit that search, or at least which file it is in in the theme files?

I’ve added the ivory search to the menu bar, but it seems to only align to the top, not lined up with the other menu items (see screenshot): https://ibb.co/BsS8M1f

I’ve tried adding
vertical-align: middle;
to various places, but cannot make a difference.
