• I have used the in built WordPress search widget on a site and I found this purely by accident.

    If you type in just a “£” without the quotes on my server it takes you to the Apache 2 Test Page.

    Is this a bug with WordPress or my site?

    Server is Cent OS,
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks
    Kev

  • This looks to be an issue with your site, specifically your Apache installation. I just verified that when I search for £ on my install, it works as intended.

    Ok,

    i’ve done some further investigations, its not the Apache Installation but thanks for your advice.

    I have other websites on this server and they don’t use the search function but I tested it on the other site with positive results. They work.

    So its defiantly something to do this particular site. the code in the url bar is https://www.website.co.uk/?s=%C2%A3

    Further information about plugins and themes used are as follows;

    Plugins:-
    ———
    all in one seo pack -> 2.3.10.2
    contact form -> 4.5.1
    disable comments -> 1.5.2
    lockdown wp admin -> 2.3.2
    order your posts manually ->
    simple 301 redirects -> 1.07
    wordfence security -> 6.2.3
    wp maintenance mode 2.08
    wp mail smtp -> 0.9.5

    Theme:-
    ———
    Modernize -> 3.11

    Wordpress – > 4.6.1

    Sorry all I should have posted all this information in the first place.

    I have deactivated all the plugins and I still have the same problem, so its not the plugins!

    Any other advice?

    Thanks

    Kev

    I don’t quite follow your testing parameters. Are you saying the other site where the search works correctly is using the same Apache installation or it’s simply another site elsewhere?

    When you disable all plugins on the problem site, did you also switch to one of the default twenty* themes? You need to do this to ensure WP is in an entirely default state. You might also try replacing the wp-includes and wp-admin folders and contained files with those from a fresh download, as well as whatever default theme files you are using. Also replace all the root WP installation files except wp-config.php.

    Depending on where the Apache test file is relative to the site’s or WP’s root, it shouldn’t even be possible for WP to redirect there, it’d have to be some server level directive that does so. Try switching the site to use plain permalinks and temporarily renaming the WP root’s .htaccess file, as well as any parent folder .htaccess if there are any. If the behavior persists with WP in the default state and with no .htaccess files, I think it would have to be something in the site’s .conf file or files. If you have such access, try renaming that file or folder structure and replacing it with the default Apache version. Restart Apache to register the new configuration files.

    Thanks bcworkz for your kind reply.

    Yes the other sites are located on the same server and work perfectly.

    I take onboard your comments but i don’t really want to take apart a working site just for the ability for people to search when everything else on the site works perfectly. So I’ve take the view to remove the search facility for now.

    Once again thank your for your time and kind help.
