search engine friendly urls

    when i set the permalinks to (date and name based) im unable to click the link on the bottom of the page to go to the previous stories.it just clicks to the same page. when i set the settings for default im able to go to previous entries but the url isnt search engine friendly. is there anyway that i can make the urls search engine friendly along with clicking on the link and going to previous stories
