Search capabilities in dashboard not working

Yesterday, I found that the search function in Media Library and Posts were not working: no results were found, even though the search terms were very definitely items that were present. The same basic behaviour also occurred in the Page Attributes/Parent Page box when editing a page – normally after typing a few letters in, pages with the same text would appear as a dropdown list, but now nothing.

No new plugins have been added recently (though I can’t say when updates might have happened automatically) and it is a custom theme (not mine), but these functions have worked fine for 9 months that the site has been in existence.

I do see that such a problem (at least the media library search) has occurred for others in the past, but generally immediately after setup.
