    Hello,

Thanks for making such a great plugin, it worked really well.

However, after moving from HostGator to SiteGround, the internal links are using the sub domain rather than the usual domain name. For example:

The site being migrated was getwebtips.com

This site is now being hosted on an addon domain on my main account at SiteGround which is joecanwrite.com

The internal links on getwebtips.com now point to getwebtips.joecanwrite.com

Is there something I shouldn’ve done to avoid this before the migration?

Can I fix this after the migration?

    Thanks

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hello @joecanwrite,

Ivan Atanasov from SiteGround here. I took the liberty of checking the WordPress installation on getwebtips.com and I can confirm that Home and SiteURL of this app are set to https://getwebtips.joecanwrite.com.

Additionally, during a very quick review, I was able to find approximately 15072 instances in your database where https://getwebtips.joecanwrite.com can be changed to https://getwebtips.com.

Judging from your post here, I believe you would like to access this application with https://getwebtips.com

I would recommend that you backup your database and then execute a wp search-replace changing getwebtips.joecanwrite.com to getwebtips.com to have this done.

Did you import onto getwebtips.joecanwrite.com or joecanwrite.com?
The plugin will get the siteurl of the site that you are importing to and set it.

I recommend that you first create a new WordPress install on the target url (joecanwrite.com), once WordPress is running, import the file without doing any find/replace.

If the customer is willing to re-do the process, I believe this is the better option of the two ??

    @joecanwrite, please try @yaniiliev ‘s suggestion first

@yaniiliev thanks for your quick reply.

The site was hosted on getwebtips.com at HostGator.

Then I created an add-on domain at SiteGround, which was an addon to the main domain on my account which is joecanwrite.com

So the new location at SiteGround appeared to be (AFAICT) getwebtips.joecanwrite.com

But really I want it to be getwebtips.com but on SiteGround.

After doing the import, if I go to getwebtips.com it looks OK (I have changed the nameservers at Namecheap to point to SiteGround) but if I click on an internal link on the site at SiteGround.com it takes me to the page but with the URL getwebtips.joecanwrite.com

    Does that make sense? Thanks!

Yes, the internal domain (getwebtips.joecanwrite.com) is what the website is using.
After changing the DNS, you still need to change the site URL.
Again, the best option with the least downtime will be to install a fresh WordPress and then import a backup. URLs will be set properly and you do not need to do any find/replace in the database.

OK, will delete the WordPress installation.
The do a fresh install of WordPress at getwebtips.com
Then migrate with the plugin into the fresh install at getwebtips.com

    Thanks.
