Hi Dan. I’m giving the free version of your plugin a spin before buying it. So far so good and I’m excited by the fact that we won’t have to rely on Google and that we can secure our documents in the paid version! However I hope that you can help us with a couple of issues.

The documents we post are usually a few pages long and unless you hover over it the “Prev” and “Next” buttons don’t appear so it’s not obvious that there may be more than one page. I understand that we can set the display height in the paid version so that some of the next page would be visible as a cue.

However, our documents (8.5″x11″, portrait mode) are displayed mid-way down a web page. Since the Prev/Next buttons appear at the bottom of the PDF the user has to click the “Next” button at the bottom of the PDF, then scroll the actual web page back up to see the top of the next page of the PDF then repeat for the following pages.

Based on these challenges I’m wondering, in the Secure version, is it possible to employ a scroll bar (like the current PDF plugin we’re using) in lieu of the buttons? I would actually prefer a scroll bar rather than the buttons but if that’s not possible would we be able to relocate the button location to the top of the PDF display area?

Here’s one of the sites where I’d like to use it…

I’m not using your plugin on that site yet as I wanted you to get an idea about what I’m after and why.

Hope that makes sense and TIA for your hard work and advice!

  • Thank you very much for your thoughts and feedback!

Just to be clear, the viewer itself is currently identical in the paid version – the paid functionality is just the ‘secure’ functionality that makes it difficult to download the original PDF. That may not be necessary for you of course.

I’m pleased to hear you understand the main point of this new viewer – to reduce reliance on third parties – and of course I understand that it currently offers a fairly basic viewing experience.

We would like to do more work on it, and your ideas here are very important. It could be possible to add the option to move the ‘toolbar’ to the top and/or have it always visible.

I’ll add these ideas to our list, but of course I can’t promise any firm timelines for these. Please do keep watching for updates, and keep the feedback coming!

    Thanks,

    Dan

    Thanks for listening Dan.

Agreed, we wouldn’t employ the secure/paid version on that particular website, but I have several others that would benefit.

With respect to the location of the “Prev” and “Next” buttons, the option for having them appear at the top would enhance the UX…as long as they appear on hover of course.

I’d really like the scroll option however. That would make viewing of multipage documents very intuitive.

Until one of those options is available I’m afraid I’ll have to stick with the Google supported PDF embedder we’re currently using. I hope you’ll be able to enhance your plugin soon though!

    Best wishes.

Thanks for the further feedback. I’ll see what we can do!

We’re also very interested in more / different UI controls. This new plugin looks AWESOME for single page docs or maybe up to a few pages but we have longer docs that need to be displayed and this UI does not seem too user friendly in those cases ATM. We’ll be keeping tabs on your development though since we’re not completely satisfied with our current solution. Thanks for this needed contribution to the WP community.
