Following are links to screenshots that show controls are missing in Add/Edit Page/Post, and that settings are correct, but problem is occurring anyway.

    Need to disallow commenting.

Under Settings, Discussion: UNcheckd is “Allow people to post comments on new articles.” But comment form under “Leave a reply” appears anyway. See https://screencast.com/t/WaTN7L3E3wr

You can see comment boxes on all pages but the home page here: https://cultureblog.modelpeopleinc.com/culture-blog/

You can see there is no control for “Allow comments” control in Add/Edit Page/Post, nor for pingbacks and trackbacks here:

I deactivated all plugins, but the comment boxes didn’t go away.

I tried the Twenty Ten theme, but the comment boxes didn’t go away.

    Have you tried:

    – checking through Troubleshooting WordPress 3.1 – Master List

    – switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    Did all three.

And changed the name of the plgins folder to disable it completely. the result of that was everything on the site went away EXCEPT the comment box.

So the problem is definitely not an active or unactive plugin. It’s not the theme, since the comment box is there with Twenty Ten and every other theme I tried.

The problem is something in WordPress. The installation is good. And at one point, before this problem, I unchecked the box for “Allow people to post comments” under Settings, Discussion, and the comment boxes DID all go away. But they came back, and the problem that this ticket is about started.

I’ve searched for hours and haven’t found anything anywhere about this problem.

    Advice, anyone?

In case anybody’s interested, I spent several more hours with tech support and finally accepted that the only solution was to reinstall WP.

    Lost all my work.

    Have to rebuild.

Content box is gone with the same theme I was using. So it wasn’t the theme.

Will check what happens after each plugin installaion and activation to see if that turns up any explanations.

just realised “Allow comments” override is in the Quick Edit panel. It’s not SUPPOSED to be under the text box in Add/Edit Page/Post.
