Scheduled Events can not be commented on

As soon as an event is in status “Scheduled”, the “comments” section in the events edit screen disappears which indicates that no comments can be added. As long as the event is in draft or publish mode, the Comments section is available and comments can be added.
Is this intentional or can this easily be changed? I would like to add comments all the time independent of the events status.Additionally, as soon as an event is in status “Scheduled”, the public events detail screen still shows the reply/comment box. If the user enters a comment, he receives a white screen of death. So I think there is some condition in the templates missing that disables the reply/comment form and button.
