On one of my client’s sites, email notifications of blog posts that are scheduled are not being sent. However, email notifications of blog posts that are published immediately ARE being correctly sent. My client is using the free version of Jetpack. Would she need to purchase a plan in order for these scheduled post notifications to work, or is this something that can be fixed, perhaps a server setting needs adjusting? Thanks for any tips.

    Hi Holly,

I took a look and the Jetpack connection looks great for the site, so no issues with that. Are the notifications for the scheduled posts ever sent (such as later than the scheduled posting time) or just not at all? If they’re being sent later, it’s likely because with scheduled posts, they aren’t actually posted until the first time someone visits the site after that scheduled posting time. The visit triggers the post.

Thanks for taking a look. The notifications for the scheduled posts are never sent. We’ve checked with several people, because I know certain mail providers are notorious for sending legitimate messages to spam folders, and each person is using a different mail provider and no one is receiving them.

Could this be an issue with a server setting?

    Hi @hollykny

Thanks. I checked for two emails on your subscriber list and I’m seeing proof that the email notifications were triggered and successfully sent for your post from 4 days ago.

I can’t share the emails I checked here without your consent and for privacy reasons. But could you confirm the status of this issue? Does it persist? If you could reach out to us privately to send us some of the affected subscriber emails, that would help.

Hi Daniel! Thanks so much for following up on this. I can explain why you saw proof of those notifications being received. Those were not scheduled posts. Posts that are published the instant my client is finished typing them work fine – the notifications go right out. If she types a post and schedules it for the next morning, notifications do not go out.

Here is some history in case it helps you see the post notifications history for these.

10/13 – she typed a post and published it immediately. We got the emails.

10/18 – she scheduled a post to go out at 4:00am. The post appeared on the blog just fine, but no one received any notifications.

10/19 – she scheduled a post titled “Gentle Reminder” to go out at 4:00am. The post appeared on the blog but no notifications went out.

10/25 – she edited an old post from 9/25 and put it in draft mode, then hit Publish. So that manual update triggered a notification just fine. She also published a new post titled “Small Works Big Show” and hit Publish so it wasn’t scheduled. Notifications went out for this as well. I think these were the two you saw 4 days ago.

    Hi @hollykny,

    Thank you for waiting.

I attempted to recreate the issue by scheduling multiple posts, but all attempts were unsuccessful. For every post I scheduled, I consistently received email notifications upon their publication.

To make sure we’re on the same page, the posts scheduled that did not send email notifications for you, were posts newly created and instead of directly publishing, scheduled for a later date, or they were posts previously created, updated and rescheduled?

    Hi Alin,

The issue occurs when we create new posts and schedule them to go out the next morning.

Hello there – I have just subscribed to the site’s newsletter with our email address. Could you please ask your client to schedule a new post again so that we can check if we are getting the notification or not?

Please ask them to not schedule already published post or scheduling the post after publishing, we want them to schedule only non-published new post.

@bizanimesh – thank you for your reply. We have scheduled a brand new post for tomorrow, 11/24/23, at 4:00am Pacific Standard Time (United States).

Hi there – thanks, it is scheduled for 5:30 pm (my time), which is ~4 hrs after from now. We will recheck this after 4 hrs.

Giving you an update – we are not sure what happened, but her scheduled post today did not post to the blog itself, nor did notifications go out, and it appeared under Posts > All Posts as being in Draft mode today, although next to it, it said “last updated 11/24/23 at 4:00am” which makes no sense as she didn’t touch it.

So she is going to create a brand new post and schedule it for 11/25/23 at 5:00am PST again (west coast of the US), so hopefully this one will post normally.

Hi there – no worries, we will check back again at that new time. ??

It looks as though our scheduled post that was supposed to post today, 11/25, at 4:00am PST, did not post at all. In WordPress, it says “Missed schedule” in red next to the post name in the date column. Could all of these issues have anything to do with a server setting that has something to do with scheduling? What does Jetpack require as far as server settings for scheduling and email notifications?
