Scheduled backups not running

    Hi Jesse –

    I created a Scheduled Backup to run overnight. When I checked this morning I saw that no backup was done.

    I did a little investigating, and saw that when I deactivated then reactivated the Total Upkeep plugin there were initially 2 cron events — boldgrid_backup_wp_cron_backup and boldgrid_backup_wp_cron_run_jobs. But after a few minutes the boldgrid_backup_wp_cron_run_jobs event disappeared.

    And I tried again to define a scheduled backup, but nothing happens.

    Do you have some ideas on why the Scheduled Backups are not working, and how I can resolve it?

    Hi Joseph & Brad – Fyi, the backup scheduled over the weekend didn’t run, so the issue is still outstanding.

    I’ll circle back with Brad on this and see what else we can think of that might explain why the scheduled backups aren’t firing off as expected. It might take us some time to figure something out and thank you for your patience throughout this whole process!

    Hi Mike,

    Out of curiosity, are any of the cron jobs that work on your website created by third plugins or are they all core WordPress crons?

    Hi Joseph –

    This is a membership site, and I have many other plugins, with many other cron jobs.

    But I deactivated all my other plugins and your cron job was still disappearing. See the earlier ticket with more details. So that rules out a conflict with some other plugin.

    If you want, we could do a session where you could look at my system. Maybe you will spot something unusual? How can we move this conversation to a private conversation?

    Hi Mike,

    I think the next step to figuring out what is going on will be to contact your hosting provider to see if they have any insight on what might be preventing the Cron from executing as expected.

    Another thing you can try if you haven’t already done so is to delete and reinstall Total Upkeep completely. It is possible that there is some kind of file corruption with the Cron scripts generated by Total Upkeep and a reinstallation could help ensure the integrity of all the files.

    Hi Joseph –

    I see on your Preflight Check the cron section has some No’s:

    Cron
    System crontab available? No
    PHP allow_url_fopen enabled? No
    Curl SSL enabled? No
    Can fetch a remote url via CLI? No`

    Do any of these raise any red flags for you?

    Hi Mike,

    Those settings don’t raise any particular red flags with regards to WP Cron scheduled backups and they are consistent with setups where system level Cron jobs are disabled. Did your host have any additional information about WP-Crons that might help us figure out what the problem is?

    Thanks, Joseph, for that info.

    I contacted GoDaddy, my hosting provider, and they are investigating. But they have not yet gotten back to me.

    I also completely removed and reinstalled Total Upkeep, as you suggested, but the same thing continues to happen. And I see the same issue on both my live site and my development site, so a one-off corruption was unlikely.

    So we’ve ruled out a conflict with another plugin (because I deactivated them all and it still happened), and a one-off corruption. It seems to have something to do with my environment, maybe the WordPress version I have, or the PHP version, etc., or from some configuration option in my environment. I don’t think I have anything very unusual, so it’s surprising to me that you haven’t seen this before.

    Hi Mike,

    At this point I think you are correct, there is potentially some kind of issue with the server environment that is responsible for these errors.

    The only other instance that I have seen with WP-Cron scheduled backups not triggering involved a caching plugin with Object Caching enabled. However in that situation all WP-Cron jobs were failing to run, not just ones related to Total Upkeep.

    Please let us know if you host finds anything so we can continue exploring other options!
