Scheduled backups are not being made

I have recently set up automatic daily backups. However, we are receiving this email message:
There was an error during automatic backup, please check the logs.
Error: Could not make the backup due to internal server error.I have checked the logs and there does not appear to be any obvious errors. The backups are being made and are available to download, but sometimes there is an internal server error when trying to download.

Ideally, we would not be receiving this message and backups would always be available. Any assistance is appreciated. Thank you!
