My current version 6.0.14 (updated today)

I have been having an issue for months with scans not finishing beyond:

Fetching list of known malware files from Wordfence

Have tried everything suggested in the faq help section but nothing has fixed this issue.

Can anyone suggest a fix or resolve? Thought of uninstalling WF and looking for something else as I fear that my site is not secure given it never completes a scan.

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

Sorry to hear you’re having trouble with scans completing. The issue usually boils down to not having enough system resources. Make sure to double-check the system requirements. Are you on a shared hosting platform? You may want to try disabling Live Traffic if you are to save processor cycles.

Actually, removing completely and reinstalling is a good option to try. There may be an issue with your install that is causing the issue as well.

    Thanks WFBrian,

I assume I will need to talk to my hosting company re resources, they would be familiar I guess and maybe assist.

I use a company – “Crucial” here in Australia and have found their hosting excellent to date. So by your question re shared hosting I’m guessing this is what you ask. I’m not tech. ??

Ages ago I did attempt to uninstall and reinstall but it kept all my settings so nothing changed. I guessing from the link you provided I need to check the box to remove the database totally.

This won’t effect anything else will it? This might prove to be a good idea to quickly eliminate one thing first then contact our host.

    Alan.

    Hi Alan,

Removing the database just removes the Wordfence tables and does not affect WordPress or any other plugins.

The server requirements are located here:

    https://docs.wordfence.com/en/Wordfence_system_requirements

Make sure they have enough memory allocated to your site.

Let us know if that helps or not.

    Thanks Brian,

I will follow the removal link option to eliminate this first then run a scan and see what happens. ??

    Will let you know.
    Cheers,
    Alan.

    Hi Brian,

Reinstalled/reactivated leaving everything at default setting, trying to run a scan but as been in the past still stuck on:

    Scan Summary
[Jul 29 11:56:44] Scanning for known malware files
    Scan Detailed Activity
[Jul 29 12:20:05] Analyzed 3700 files containing 153.62 MB of data so far

Doesn’t want to move past this as before, does this mean I need more enough system resources allocated by the host?

    Cheers,
    Alan.

    Alan,

Yes, here’s what to try in order.

-Make sure your host has enough memory allocated to your site.
    -Try disabling live traffic.
-Try the settings described here (you may have seen this already):

I Just tried rerunning the scan again and I got further this time:
[Jul 29 12:34:35] Analyzed 4200 files containing 174.6 MB of data so far

So maybe the host has not allocated enough memory – I will disable live traffic and try again then call the host.

Yes I had originally tried correcting via the link you suggest but to no avail.

Appreciate all your help. ?? Will let you know what happens.

    Cheers,
    Alan.

Ran it for a third time, each time it seemed to get stuck and wow, it has finally completed a scan!

    [Jul 29 12:53:38] Total disk space: 393.7238GB — Free disk space: 40.8097GB
[Jul 29 12:53:38] The disk has 41789.15 MB space available
    [Jul 29 12:53:39] ——————-
    [Jul 29 12:53:39] Scan Complete. Scanned 5660 files, 13 plugins, 1 themes, 71 pages, 0 comments and 15692 records in 83 seconds.
[Jul 29 12:53:39] Wordfence used 12.71MB of memory for scan. Server peak memory usage was: 41.39MB

Houston I think we have success!!!

    Thanks so much Brian.
