I’m suddenly having an issue with scans not completed and being terminated after 3 hours with the errors below. What I don’t understand is what the 1442294 records are?

I’ve set the “Maximum execution time for each scan stage” to 15 seconds, but it’s been going for over an hour again and looks like it’s going to fail again.

    Any help much appreciated, thanks.

Scan terminated with error: The scan time limit of 3 hours has been exceeded and the scan will be terminated.

Wordfence used 119.25 MB of memory for scan. Server peak memory usage was: 149 MB
    Scan interrupted.

    Scanned 21366 files, 11 plugins, 1 themes, 1959 pages, 213 comments and 1442294 records in 3 hours 1 second.

  • Similar problem: scan never finishes – warning displayed and I have to terminate it

    Scan Failed
The current scan looks like it has failed. Its last status update was 6 mins ago. You may continue to wait in case it resumes or cancel and restart the scan.

Discovered by trial and error that the scan will complete if I disable all of these options

    • Scan file contents for backdoors, trojans and suspicious code
    • Scan file contents for malicious URLs
    • Scan for out of date, abandoned, and vulnerable plugins, themes, and WordPress versions

Obviously I don’t want to leave those scans disabled.

Is there a debugging switch I can set to display which file or directory is causing the problem?

    Hello
Same problem, brand new site, only wordfence installed, ssl actived.

it’s looks like wordfence is Scanning file contents for infections and vulnerabilities and never end. I disable scan of file contents for URLs on a domain blacklist

if i disable Scan file contents for backdoors, trojans and suspicious code, the scan is successful

I found the debug switch (under Tools/Diagnostics) but it wasn’t very helpful.
On one test these were the last entries in the Scan Detailed Activity window before the scan appeared to hang, but it doesn’t always hang in the same place.

    [Aug 02 14:05:01] Scanning contents: wp-content/plugins/contact-form-7/includes/pipe.php (Size:1336B Mem:38.0M)
    [Aug 02 14:05:02] Scanning contents: wp-content/plugins/contact-form-7/includes/rest-api.php (Size:8429B Mem:40.0M)

The three scan options listed in my previous post are still disabled, and I’ve turned off the debugging option to try to avoid going over my usage limits.

I also used the WP Rollback plugin to downlevel Wordfence to 6.3.12 to see if that helped. The scan still hung.

Disabled ‘Scan file contents for backdoors, trojans and suspicious code’ and the scan completes. Thanks @siteweb44 and @adriandw

Not ideal to leave that disabled though.

    I’m agree with you @leanda

I agree, it’s not ideal to have to disable important scanning options.
In my case, the scan doesn’t complete unless I disable all three options listed above.

    Hello leanda, Adrian and philippe!
I understand that all of you are experiencing the same issue which is “scan doesn’t complete” but it could be related to different reasons on your websites, so I suggest sticking to the forum rules regarding “opening separate topic for your questions“. I’ll try to answer leanda’s questions in this thread and post a couple of suggestions that could help in resolving her issue, if this didn’t help you Adrian and philippe, feel free to open a new topic.

This number of records is a sum of all of the database rows including (posts, pages, comments, categories, etc…), which has been mentioned in details in the same line.

Without disabling any of the scan options you mentioned, please check the following:
    – If your website has any caching plugin, I suggest excluding the cache files directory from being scanned, check “Exclude files from scan that match these wildcard patterns” as a reference.
    – You can do the same thing if you have large backup or log files as well.
    – Try to disable “Scan images, binary, and other files as if they were executable” scan option if it was enabled.

Let me know how it goes,
    Thanks.

    hi Wfalaa

This site was brand new one, i start the scan just after the WP install, no page, no post, no plugin installed except wordfence.

    Hi @wfalaa

Thanks for the reply. I’ve just checked and on this site we are running W3 Total Cache and excluded wp-content/cache, enabled ‘Scan file contents for backdoors, trojans and suspicious code’ and it all worked again!

    Thanks so much!
