My site has been running with no wordfence issues for a long time.
I logged onto my site this morning and found the wordfence scan had errored out…
[Dec 01 08:22:25] Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 221249536) (tried to allocate 31457280 bytes) in /hermes/bosnaweb16a/b1585/{WEBSITE}/wp-content/plugins/wordfence/lib/wfConfig.php on line 530

I obscured my provider {WEBSITE} specific info.

I had set the settings to request 300MB in settings a long time ago.

I immediately contacted my hosting provider. They set my site up to the max and I still got the same error. They set WordPress memory to its max. I still got the same error.

I have done nothing on this site for a few weeks other than to sign in and check on things. It has run with no issues until today.

I am not real website-savvy so your kind help is greatly appreciated.

Checked my host’s php. It is 5.5.22.

As previously stated, my site’s WordFence is back to scanning without a fatal error.
My host’s service people had set up my site’s memory to their max as well as setting my WordPress memory up to its max. It didn’t help at the time, but after doing nothing else, my WordFence was back to scanning without fatal errors. I wonder if, after changing my memory limits, my site needed to be rebooted to make those settings take effect.

Whatever. Now I am watching this like a hawk.

I too am experiencing the same issue on one site. The host shut the site down because it was pulling enormous amounts of memory trying to scan and run other utilities. I’ve deactivated the plugin until there’s a fix. Installed another security plugin.
Wordfence Live Activity:Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 29116863 bytes) in….

    WP_MEMORY_LIMIT WordPress memory limit 40M
    WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT Administrative memory limit 256M

    Hi All,
I’m not sure yet if this is something related to the recent version or not, further investigations are still underway, meanwhile, I suggest the following:
    – Set 512 megabytes for “How much memory should Wordfence request when scanning“.
    – Leave “Maximum execution time for each scan stage” blank at (Wordfence > Options) page.
    – Enable “Use low resource scanning“.
    – Turn off “Scan images, binary, and other files as if they were executable” option.

@rgrissom keeping WP_MEMORY_LIMIT set to 40M isn’t recommended on websites with several plugins activated, I suggest increasing this value to something like 256M following any of these methods.

Hopefully you will be able to run a scan successfully after that.

Let me know how it goes,
    Thanks.

I have just run scans on my nine sites, and all are working perfectly, with no errors. This is good. What is very bad, is that during the last few days of this scanning error, Wordfence developers have been silent on this support thread. Quiet obviously, this has been a Wordfence problem, so to hide under a rock is totally unacceptable. If you have a problem Wordfence, please take the 30 damn seconds to say so, and us users will wait patiently for a fix. But to ignore us says a lot. Nice that the problem is fixed. But users’ confidence is perhaps damaged by your silence.

Hi there, I confirm scan is working again. It has taken longer than usual and memory used and peak memory usage during the scan have been lower than usual. I did not make any change in configuration.

AS many of us as have this problem, I am somewhat disappointed that WordFence has not come to this thread to offer their opinion. I look at the left column of this page. It would seem to at least indicate that they have an interest here. Apparently not.

    Hi all,

We’ve made a change on the server side a few days ago that should clear up the memory usage issue on sites that didn’t previously have issues. If you still have an issue with memory usage, it may be a combination of settings and other plugins or the theme on the site.

@scifiwriter: The new www.remarpro.com forum layout makes the page links a little harder to see than the old version (below the last post, far to the right) — Alaa from Wordfence had answered the post a while before your last post, but he was on the second page.

We do try to reply to posts for as many of the free users as we can, but it’s not always immediate. Thanks!

Okay. Now I feel a lot better. Glad to see you both have replied. We appreciate the help.
