• Hi when I try and scan it gets to this stage:
Scanning file contents for infections and vulnerabilities
    [Jun 07 10:25:42]
Scanning files for URLs on a domain blacklist

And then just does nothing. I’ve tried to kill the scan and start again but same result. Yesterday got alerted by 1&1 of a suspicious file and luckily they sorted it. But now I’m worried. How can I make the scan work?
    Many thanks
    J

  • Hi J,
Please turn on “Enable debugging mode” option -temporarily- under (Wordfence > Tools => Diagnostics) and run a new scan after that, keep watching for any error message that might appear in the activity log, sharing the last 20 lines of the scan activity log would be helpful too, you can use “pastebin” to share large text.
Also, take a look at these common reasons that may cause scan not to finish.

    Thanks.

Thanks tried that but still just hangs?
Also I have this as last entry after which it just hangs:
    php/src/data/elasticloadbalancingv2/2015-12-01/api-2.json.php (Size:42290B Mem:77.0M)
[Jun 08 08:33:11] Scan process ended after forking.

    Hi,
Please kill any running scans at the moment, then start a new one and when it hangs click on “Email activity log” and email it to “alaa [at] wordfence [dot] com”, also emailing a diagnostics report from (Wordfence > Tools => Diagnostics) to the same email address would be helpful.
And may I know which options you have selected in “Scans to include” section, you can share a screenshot showing these options.

    Thanks.

    Did you receive this ok?

I received the required reports, thanks! here you are my suggestions:
    – Make sure you have “database cache” function disabled in W3 Total Cache plugin.
Increase the “WP_MEMORY_LIMIT” to something like 256M.
    – You have set the “max_execution_time” in php.ini file to 600, which is not really practical, “30” is the default value, if you need to bump it up a little bit, then you can try “60” or “90”, and don’t forget to adjust “Maximum execution time for each scan stage” option after that following this guide.

Let me know how it goes,
    Thanks.

OK I’ve disabled the database cacheing W3 Total Cache.

Re. the WP_Memory_Limit – where do I increase that? I can’t see any mention of it in my config file?

Also – sorry I don’t know where the php.ini file is? I’ve searched for it with filezilla but get no results.

    Many thanks
    J

    – By editing “wp-config.php” file in the root directory of your website, then adding this line define( 'WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' ); before this line:
/* That's all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */.

    – Because there are many different server configurations/environments, to modify any of the values set in php.ini file, it’s recommended to contact your hosting provider asking for the proper way to do that.

    Thanks.

Hi – thanks for that. Spoken to 1&1 and implemented all those changes as advised and still the same – it just hangs.

I don’t know what is best to do as Wordfence isn’t working for us and I can’t check the site which is worrying.
What else can I do to fix this?

    Thanks Jonathan

    [ No bumping please. ]

Would it make sense to delete Wordfence and re-install?

    Hi Jonathan,
You can give it a try with “Delete Wordfence tables and data on deactivation” option enabled in (Wordfence > Options), then deactivate the plugin and uninstall it, then reinstall it again.

Also, please resend a recent “Diagnostics” and “Scan activity” logs again.

    Thanks.

OK have done that – same result. Hangs in same stage.
Have sent you the Diagnostics and Scan activity as requested.

    Many thanks
    J

The scan activity log you sent doesn’t show “Scan process ended after forking” message, or any other error/warning message, it ends with “info::Scanned contents of 301 additional files at 9.77 per second”, sounds like a running scan, does it get stalled at this stage?

    Thanks.

Are there any plugins that might be causing this problem with Wordfence hanging?

That’s the list we have so far, it’s worth to try disabling other installed plugins and run a new scan.

Does the scan hang at this stage while scanning files?
“info::Scanned contents of 301 additional files at 9.77 per second”?
