I inherited a site, and imported the posts to the new build – featured images stayed associated but no longer considered ‘attached’. I have a mix of images no longer being used, and those still used in blog posts but they’re all marked ‘unattached’, so clean up is impossible with this bulk of content.

It’s pretty unbelievable there isn’t a built in solution to scan for media that is associated with posts but got de-attached, and then auto attach them.

I thought there was an option to “Scan for Los Attachments” but seems like that was an old wp version

How do I solve this without manually (and visually) going through each post and either re-uploading or attaching, which seems awfully ineffective.

    Thanks

  • Hi @h4hagency
It sounds like you have a large number of media files that are marked as “unattached” on your WordPress site. Unfortunately, there is no built-in way to automatically reattach these media files to posts or pages in WordPress. However, there are a few different approaches you can take to try to resolve this issue:

    1. Use a plugin: Several WordPress plugins can help you reattach media files to posts or pages. For example, the Force Regenerate Thumbnails plugin can allow you to reattach featured images to posts, and the Media Cleaner plugin can help you find and delete unused media files.
    2. Use a SQL query: If you are comfortable working with SQL and have access to your WordPress database, you can try running a query to update the post_parent column for the media files you want to reattach. This will require some knowledge of SQL and maybe a bit more advanced than other options, but it can be an effective way to reattach many media files quickly.
    3. Manually reattach the media files: If you don’t want to use a plugin or run a SQL query, you can manually reattach the media files to posts or pages by editing each post or page and selecting the appropriate media file from the media library. This may take some time, but it can be an effective way to ensure that all your media files are properly attached.

I hope these suggestions are helpful! Let me know if you have any other questions.
