• If you check this image below then you can see the total size of my WordPress website which is 5.47 GB (collected from the WordPress site health menu)

When I start scanning from the Wordfence this scan goes on for a long time which is more than 5 hours and shows me the log of scanned 58GB files>

The option of “Scan files outside your WordPress installation” is disabled but it still scans a large amount of files for a long time.

Do you have any idea how could I restrict Wordfence of this amount scanning file so that the scan could finish in shorttime.

  • Thanks for reaching out.

I guess that depends on how thorough you want your scans to be.

Sites that are that size sometimes have a lot of images or use a plugin that makes duplicate images in various sizes. If you are using the scan option to Scan images, binary, and other files as if they were executable, that takes the images and opens them like a text document to scan the code that makes up the image and depending on the size of the image it can add a significant amount of time to scans. We usually only recommend enabling this option if you are cleaning an infection.

Scanning with the Use low-resource scanning option can make scans take longer because it spreads out the scan’s work over a longer period of time to help decrease the chance of high resource usage in a short period of time. This can be helpful on shared hosting providers that have lower resources available to your hosting account, or on lower VPS and dedicated hosting plans. This may make your scan times two to four times longer, but they will be less active while running. The amount of added time depends on your particular host, your Wordfence options, and the number of files scanned. If your PHP memory_limit variable is set to a lower value increasing it to something like 512M can speed things up considerably (this is set in your hosting control panel or by editing php.ini or .user.ini. Ask your hosting provider for help if you are unfamiliar with changing PHP variables).

Try these and see if that helps.

Thanks a lot for the reply.
The memory limit is 1024. My total WordPress site is around 6.0 GB but the Wordfence log shows it scanned 58GB. In the below, I shared my Wordfence scene settings. I increased the time limit because Wordfence mentioned to increasing it otherwise it can not finish the scan therefore I have to increase it to finish the full scan.

Try setting the max execution for each scan stage to 20 and enabling low resource scanning. These are in the performance options.

    Hello Mia,
Thanks for the reply I changed the settings based on your feedback but still nothing is improved.

I am not sure if you get my problem, the WordPress website size is almost 6 GB but when I start scanning the site with Wordfence then it shows that it scans more than 60 GB of files and to finish this scan it takes more than 8 hours.

How could possible of scanning 60 GB files when my website content is nearly 6 GB in total files?

You can check the Wordfence scan settings from my first post. Do you have any idea about this?

    Regards,
    Ashiq.

Hi @takevalue, thanks for all the information you’ve provided so far.

Mia is unfortunately no longer available for us here on the forums, but before being able to provide a conclusive answer on the scan size I think it’d be a good idea to see a diagnostic report.

You can send one through the Wordfence > Tools menu so we can see an overview of your settings and database tables etc. You can send that to us at wftest @ wordfence . com. Click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

NOTE: It should look as follows – Screenshot of Tools > Diagnostic > Send by Email

    Many thanks,
    Peter.
