    reinstalled wordfence, at the end of the first and successful scan, despite a ‘no problems’ outcome, at the end of detailed scan it had error text (below)

    it is showing it on every wordfence page and is big n red at the top of the ‘view activity log’ page, but that doesn’t fit in with the no problems found outcome.

    any help on what it is, whether serious and what to do, much appreciated.

    The “no problems” result you’re getting is Wordfence scan doesn’t report any issue because

    You’re getting a “no problems” result because the Wordfence scan didn’t find any issue during all the checks it was able to perform.

    But it appears that the scan encountered problems when trying to check if the adrotate and js_composer plugins needed an update.

    It seems both plugins’ update functions are not properly working. Therefore I suggest you get in touch with each plugin authors so they can identify the cause of the error.
