Hi. I’ve installed Fix Alt text as it fits my requirements but fails at the first step. The scan does not work – even after an hour there was no progress and when cancelling the scan it reports 0 posts scanned. Any ideas please…

Under the “Settings” tab, do you have at least one “Post Types” or “Taxonomies” selected that would have a post or content with an image in it?

Hi. Thanks for the quick reply. I have Events, Pages, Posts and Media Attachment selected. All will have images. I could try just selecting Pages for example.

    Hi David,

Could you record a video using Loom.com demonstrating the issue? This would be extremely helpful for us to have context.

    • To use Loom, visit https://www.loom.com/, create a free account and install the free browser plugin.
    • Record the video and then share link to the video with us.

When making the video, be sure to do the following:

    1. Have at least 1 page with an image on it and show that page (on the edit screen) in the video so that we know the page exists.
    2. Show the current settings that you have (settings page)
    3. Attempt to run the scan.

    Thank you,

    -Steven

    Hi Steven

Have recorded a video for you. No sound (no mic on this PC) but I think it will be obvious. Shows a post with images, switches to edit so you can see the structure. Then I go to Alt Text settings and show the selected options. Switch to dashboard and run scan for about a minute then stop it to show results. Even after an hour there are no results. Have tried PHP versions 8.0, 8.1 and 8.2 but we normally run 8.1. All plugins up to date except for Events Manager where we’ve frozen it on V6.3 while they sort out a few issues the the later version.

I am now able to reproduce the issue on my end. I will work on a bug fix and release a new version as soon as possible.

Thank you very much. Appreciate the swift response as this plug looks exactly what I’m looking for to force my users to add alt text to images – they’ve been told often enough but never bother!

    David,

We believe that you were running out of memory due to a bug related to how we were checking resource limits. As a result, the scan would bail out of the process and attempt to resume a minute later…at which time it would run out of memory and start the cycle again. This was causing the scan to never process anything on a single WordPress install. This did not affect multisite installations as they have 60M of memory by default versus the default 40M.

Also, you should have been getting notices about this issue in the notifications area of the plugin (located at the top-right of the Fix Alt Text admin screen).

Please update to the new version 1.6.1 and see if that solves your issue.

    Good morning Steven

Have updated and the scan completes in under a minute and gives me the results I expected. Thank you for the quick fix to the problem. I’ll check it out in full now and if it does what I expect it to I will add the plugin to several other sites.

    Thanks again – David
