Hello I have stopped the bulk image converter tool, to verify quality of compressed images. The process is far from completion, but before letting the process to complete, I’d like to better understand how the tool works.
Basically I see that compressed images retain the original name + “scaled” suffix; and the original image is left where it was. Are scaled images renamed at the end of the process? I don’t want to keep originals, and I want to keep original filenames to avoid broken links!

As a quick update, as the process was interrupted, should I perform any particular action before resuming?

I see that posts are now pointing to the “scaled” version… This means that the plugin is adjusting URLs accordingly. Are the originals wiped out at the end of the process?

We use plugins that use images from media library. For instance, page builder, slider revolution and Essential Grid. Are URLs updated correctly within these plugins?

    Hi @blutarsky!
The -scaled version of your images is created by WordPress, not by EWWW IO.
To my knowledge, no plugins use the original image (and they shouldn’t), everything should use the -scaled version because that exists from the moment you upload the image.
The originals are generally left there forever, but if you ever want to clean them, there’s a handy tool under Tools->EWWW Image Optimizer for that (make a backup first).

EWWW IO overwrites any images it compresses, and you can also choose to have it compress the “pre-scaled” original image too (in Ludicrous mode). When you’re ready to continue, just hop back over to the Bulk Optimize and start it up again!

Ah, I see, I didn’t know about this change concerning big images being scaled by WP, which was introduced in v 5.3…
Ok! The blog started in 2016 and the scaled mechanism wasn’t there at that time. This means we have some images managed by WP with the -scaled mechanism, while other images are not. Do you see any issues on this?
We will certainly clear up all the originals once done! That’s why our blog is reaching 36GB of images! Let’s shrink it!

I haven’t seen any issues from having -scaled vs. not. The pre-scaled original image is stored in the “attachment metadata” in a location plugins would have to know about to mess with–and like I said, they aren’t supposed to directly use it, except for thumbnail regens.
